Although the New York Giants secured a win over the Tennessee Titans at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, it was an ugly one.
The Giants were unable to find the end zone, something they have not done since losing Jaxson Dart to injury. Following the victory, head coach John Harbaugh was asked about the quarterback situation moving forward.
“Not at all,” Harbaugh said about considering a change. “The plans are the plans. The opportunities that you have are the opportunities you have. No matter what, we’re going to do everything we can to make our team as strong as we can based on what options we have.
“I thought Jameis did what was required in this game. The first thing you have to do is what’s necessary, what’s required. After that, then you can do what’s possible,
then maybe the impossible becomes possible. That’s from St. Francis of Assisi, in case you were wondering.”
Winston has not looked sharp since entering in relief of Dart last Monday night, and he left plenty to be desired against the Titans. In Week 2, the team looked unprepared for Winston to take over. In Week 3, the weather factored into both the Giants’ game plan and Winston’s ability to do what he wanted on the field.
Harbaugh agreed to become the Giants’ next head coach in January. Although he was not part of the decision to sign Winston in 2025, the Super Bowl-winning coach was involved in the decision to give Winston an extension before this season.
With Jake Haener serving as Winston’s backup, reports early Sunday indicated the Giants were exploring quarterback options, something Winston has no problem with.
Winston can only focus on what he can control as the Giants turn the page and begin preparing for the Arizona Cardinals next week. They will need a better version of him if they are going to stack wins. Winston will have to find chemistry with the Giants’ weapons and improve on his first two performances of the season.
