The New York Giants were among the teams that showed interest in Chicago Bears defensive tackle Gervon Dexter before he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons, reports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Schultz reported Sunday that the trade market for Dexter was heavy and included the Giants and New Orleans Saints. The Falcons displayed the strongest interest and completed the deal over the weekend, sending cornerback Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Chicago.
Dexter, a 24-year-old 2023 second-round pick out of Florida, started all 17 games last season and has 13.5 sacks in his career. The 6-foot-6, 326-pound lineman is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
The Giants have continued searching the defensive tackle market after trading
Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this offseason. New York signed veterans D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris in free agency before acquiring C.J. Okoye from the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick.
John Harbaugh described Okoye as a big, physical run-stopper and pocket-pusher, the type of player the team has been seeking.
It is unclear whether the Giants’ interest in Dexter continued after they added Okoye.
