Arthur Marshall, a former New York Giants wide receiver, died on Wednesday at 57 after a battle with stomach cancer.
A Hephzibah, Georgia, native who starred at Hephzibah High School and later at the University of Georgia, Marshall went undrafted in 1992 and signed with the Denver Broncos. He made the PFWA All-Rookie team that season.
As a rookie, Marshall completed an 81-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Tillman against Dallas, tying an NFL record for the longest completion by a non-quarterback.
In two seasons with Denver, he caught 54 passes for 853 yards and three touchdowns.
The Broncos traded Marshall to the Giants in April 1994. He spent the final three years of his career in New York from 1994-96, recording 33 receptions for 414 yards and one
touchdown while also returning kicks. He finished with 87 catches for 1,267 yards and four scores in 68 games.
“When he touched the field, you knew he was on the field,” Hephzibah High School coach Daniel Dorsey said. “He made a difference, whether it was offense, defense or special teams.”
Marshall was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2003.
His obituary remembered him as a giver by nature who found joy in helping others. He is survived by his wife, Lena, his children, and six grandsons.
