New York Giants center John Michael Schmitz is not happy about losing his starting job to Bryan Hudson.
“I mean, no one should feel good about it at all,” Schmitz told the New York Daily News. “I was just, ya know, I just kinda don’t know what — I don’t know. I don’t know.
"It’s just tough all around. I’m just being a pro out there and supporting the team any way I could and being there for B-Hud in the start. But obviously, I want to be out there competing and helping this team to win.”
The change began against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Schmitz missed Friday’s practice after the birth of his first child and was available for the game, but Hudson took the first-team reps and started.
Afterward, head coach John Harbaugh described the move
as temporary.
“JMS had missed a couple days of practice, and Huddy had been doing so well,” Harbaugh said. “We kind of felt like he’s got the reps. He’s made the calls, and we were kind of thinking about starting to work him in a little bit here and there. And it just made sense. It just made sense, and I think it paid off. It’s not a long-term thing. I mean, we just have two centers we really like.”
Hudson’s play altered that timeline. He impressed enough in the Cardinals game that he has handled this week’s practice snaps and will start again on Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
Schmitz, the 2023 second-round pick who had been inconsistent early in the season, has lost the starting job for the time being despite Harbaugh’s earlier comments that the switch was not permanent.
