The New York Giants may part ways with veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton as they trim their roster to 53 players this weekend, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported on Saturday.
The longest-tenured Giants player might be on the way out.
Darius Slayton might not make the cut, The Post has learned.
All summer, it was assumed Slayton would be on the roster, even though he clearly was not moving the same following surgery to repair a sports hernia.
Slayton is in Year 2 of a three-year, $36 million deal. His 2026 base salary is $12.5 million with a $15.9 million cap hit. Schwartz said those numbers will not save him if head coach John Harbaugh concludes he cannot contribute as envisioned.
In Friday’s preseason finale, Slayton started and played
33 snaps after Jameis Winston departed. He was not targeted. Xavier Gipson, who offers special-teams value, scored on a 37-yard catch in 25 snaps.
A week earlier in Miami, Slayton had four catches for 58 yards, a showing Harbaugh called “so big.” Camp production had been limited after offseason sports hernia surgery. He finished last season with 37 receptions in 14 games.
A release would save about $3.17 million in non-guaranteed salary, per Over The Cap, while leaving a dead-cap charge of $9 million to $12 million. Calvin Austin III’s torn ACL opened a receiver vacancy, but Slayton still may miss a Giants roster for the first time since 2019.
