New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart spent part of Wednesday explaining a series of plays that did not look like much at first glance.
The first came late against Dallas, on the 13-play drive that made it 28-14 in a 28-20 win. Dart threw to Devin Singletary in the left flat three times. The gains were 12, seven, and nine yards -- the last one was a touchdown. It looked like New York had found one easy answer and kept calling it. Dart said that was not the case.
None of the three throws were the same play, contrary to popular belief. Dart noticed a Cowboys tendency early in the series and stayed with it.
“I just saw a tendency from the first play, kind of in that drive, and then it just kept showing up,” Dart told reporters. “I’m not going to be
getting bored with just getting completions and good gains. So I tried to just use my eyes as much as possible, and then I thought Motor did a great job that drive.”
That is not a flashy detail. It is the kind that usually means a quarterback is starting to settle in.
Something similar happened earlier with Isaiah Likely. Dart and the tight end spent the summer talking through concepts and the different looks they might get. Near the goal line, Dart put the ball on the side away from the defender. They had not worked on that one much, but they still saw it the same way.
“That’s a lot of work, a lot of communication that we’ve had,” Dart said. “And he has a unique feel for the game. That was one that we didn’t really work on a ton, but we were able to have discussions and we were just on the exact same page at the right time.”
Likely finished with eight catches on eight targets for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Both plays showed the same thing: Dart is beginning to see the game as quickly as he can throw the ball. The arm has always been obvious. The anticipation is starting to catch up.
