Jameis Winston’s response to losing the starting quarterback job has drawn high praise from New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who described the veteran’s daily leadership as something the organization does not take for granted.
Speaking on The Schrager Hour with Peter Schrager, Nagy detailed the morning Winston was informed he would not be the starter. Later that same day, Nagy walked past a meeting room and found Winston inside with J.J. McCarthy. The two quarterbacks were reviewing third-down situations together, with Winston leading the session.
Ask somebody around the league for their best Jameis Winston story, and it's very rarely some silly or hilarious tale. It's stuff like this. Here's Giants OC Matt Nagy on "The Schrager

"The leadership that he brings every day is never taken for granted," Nagy said.
Nagy noted it was the kind of moment that often goes unseen. He said Winston immediately understood the decision was about the team rather than any individual.
"This guy understands that this is about the team. And he understands when we told him the news, we broke it down to him and sat down and talked about it. He didn’t need a lot of words of explanation. And he didn’t need to feel sorry for [himself]," the coordinator said.
When the news was delivered, Winston did not require expressions of sympathy. Instead, he told the staff he understood how the game works, accepted what he had not done, and committed to being the best teammate and leader he could be for the rest of the season.
Winston has followed through on that promise every day since. Nagy pointed to Winston’s continued energy and engagement, including his readiness to enter games in goal-line or third-down packages when called upon.
Those moments, Nagy said, reflect the same person who was running film with McCarthy hours after learning he would not start.
“That’s just who he is. And that’s never going to change," Nagy said. "Everyone in this building absolutely loves him. And he has such a bright future whether it’s now or 10 years from now.
The account offers a window into the quarterback room during a period of transition and underscores the role Winston has continued to play after the starting job changed hands.
