Shannon Sharpe challenged New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo after the second-year back admitted he briefly considered retirement following a brutal 2025 ankle injury.
Skattebo told Kay Adams on Up & Adams that he entered the NFL with one rule: A major injury would end his career. That moment arrived seven games into his rookie season, when he suffered a dislocated ankle, fractured fibula, and ruptured deltoid ligament in a Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Yeah, definitely," Skattebo said when asked if retirement crossed his mind. "I would say a month in -- the first month was kind of like, 'Damn. Do I really want to do this?'"
He later said those thoughts disappeared. Long days at home during rehab helped him find who he is as a player
and a person, and by season's end he no longer planned to walk away.

"There are no winners in football; there are survivors in football. You play probably the sport that the most serious injuries happen," Sharpe said. "You gotta know when the journey is over."
The hosts said they never had time to dwell on negative thoughts after getting hurt and were surprised a young player would consider quitting so soon. Skattebo has said he is ready to continue his career with the Giants.
