The New York Giants entered Sunday looking to improve to 4-1 as they traveled to face the Washington Commanders. With both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys coming off Week 5 losses, the Giants had a clear opportunity to gain ground on the rest of the NFC East. A victory would have also given them their first 2-0 start against the division since 2009.
The Giants arrived having dropped their previous four meetings with Washington, a streak they were eager to end.
As has become something of a pattern this season, the game was played in sloppy, wet conditions that complicated matters for both offenses.
The Giants defense struggled to contain the Commanders, particularly in the second half, as Jayden Daniels’ mobility after returning from
injury proved difficult to slow down.
Daniels’ second rushing touchdown of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter pushed Washington back ahead by 14 points. The Giants responded with back-to-back touchdown drives to force overtime.
Both teams stalled repeatedly in the extra period. The Giants reached field goal range on their final possession, only for Cam Skattebo to fumble the ball away. Washington then moved into field goal range on its last drive, but poor clock management left the team without a chance to attempt a kick. The game ended in a dramatic 27-27 tie.
With the result, the Giants fell to 3-1-1 on the season. Here’s how X reacted to the tie.

Wow
What a gift! Comedy of errors results in 27 all tie between Washington and the Giants.

That is the craziest ending I've ever witnessed in an NFL game.

Watch #91 Darius Alexander conveniently, and accidentally stepped on the ball as it’s trying to be set. His best play as a Giant!!! pic.twitter.com/pYfzBXuSUK

If you told me the Giants would be 3-1-1 though 5 games and atop the NFC East, I would take it.

The NFC East winning 0 games on a week in which two teams played each other feels like a pretty good encapsulation of the division at the moment

Giants should have won, but you take the tie and run.
It’s actually pretty fitting that no team in the NFC East won this weekend despite two of the teams playing each other. Just perfect.
— Ty D. Butler (@TyDButler) October 11, 2026
What the heck just happened in Washington?!!! They had the game won and they blundered it away in the last few seconds and are forced to take the tie.
