Editor's note: The Giants announce McCarthy is questionable to return with a hip injury.
New York Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy left Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles after sustaining a painful injury to his ribs.
McCarthy had absorbed multiple shots to the midsection throughout the afternoon. On an option run, he took a hard hit from Eagles linebacker Zack Baun that appeared to land in his ribs rather than his throwing shoulder, contrary to some early reports.
He was slow to get up and eventually entered the blue medical tent. The sequence did not resemble a concussion evaluation.
A sideline replay then showed McCarthy collapsing while attempting to throw. He reached for his side and winced in serious pain before dropping to a knee.
Shortly afterward, he headed to the locker room, with backup Jameis Winston taking over under center.

The move to the locker room suggests the Giants are seeking X-rays to further assess the injury.
The development interrupts McCarthy’s second start for the Giants, who acquired him from the Minnesota Vikings in September after Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury.
New York entered the contest with a 4-2-1 record and first place in the NFC East.
Further updates on McCarthy’s status are expected once medical staff completes their evaluation.
