The New York Giants (3-1) and Washington Commanders (1-3) will square off on Sunday afternoon in a Week 5 matchup at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.
The Giants opened the week as 3.5-point home underdogs, but the spread has worsened with New York now at +4.
With this matchup on tap, Giants Wire took the opportunity to hold a Q&A with Commanders Wire managing editor Bryan Manning.
What has driven Washington's four-game winning streak against the Giants, and which part of that formula is still repeatable this season?
Manning: It’s hard to say. Jayden Daniels has been the quarterback for three of those games, and he's had some success against the Giants. Three of those four games were one-possession games, so that’s what you can always count on when these two old rivals meet.
With Jayden Daniels back from his elbow injury, how much of the offense will Washington realistically be willing to put on his legs?
Before his injury at the end of the first half against Dallas, Daniels looked 100 percent. He was accurate
at all levels of the field, and he ran only when nothing was there. The best part was that he slid on every run. It was a totally freak injury that he’ll likely undergo surgery for once the season is over. As for this week, I think there will be an acclimation period with the bulky brace. I expect it to impact his running more than his throwing from the pocket.
How concerning are the injuries to Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs, and who becomes Washington's go-to target with Diggs out and McLaurin questionable?
McLaurin first popped up on last Thursday's injury report and the news came out of nowhere. Dan Quinn said on Friday that McLaurin looked really good, but they'll see on Sunday. If both players can't go, that would mean plenty of rookie Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks and Van Jefferson would likely be elevated from the practice squad. The Commanders could also involve the running back and tight ends more in the passing game. Williams is a player to know because he's had success anytime he's been targeted, and he had an 87-yard touchdown called back last week.
What is the biggest weakness in Washington's red-zone defense, and why has it been so difficult to get stops when opponents reach scoring range?
Mike Sainristil. In Washington’s first two games, opposing quarterbacks looked for zero and targeted him. His snaps have been significantly decreased, and the secondary play has improved. Is it great? No. But better. Other than Sainristil, the Commanders still can’t seem to cover tight ends. Washington has made pedestrian tight ends look like Pro Bowlers at times. Could be a good day for Isaiah Likely.
How do you see Sunday's game playing out in a tropical storm? Who wins and what's the final score?
The weather is definitely a concern. The Commanders had 23 players on the injury report. Several will play, but these aren’t ideal conditions for players battling anything. The field at Northwest Stadium is already sloppy. You’d think the team that runs the ball best would have the advantage. The Commanders’ defense has been solid against the run. Daniels’ return should help Washington’s running game. I think Austin Ekeler will play a significant role in the game plan. Ultimately, I think this will be another close game, ugly at times. The Commanders are desperate. They need this win, which is why I think they come away with a close win. Commanders 20, Giants 16
