Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider is not one to rest on his laurels, nor is he one afraid to take on calculated risk. On Tuesday morning, Schneider's Seahawks rocked the NFL world by trading for Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson, who is a first ballot Hall of Famer in the making.
Seattle surrendered a 2027 third round pick and a 2028 fifth round pick in order to acquire Nelson's services. There is some risk involved, as Nelson's current contract expires at the end of this season. But like I said in the previous paragraph, it's obviously a well calculated one because Schneider must feel confident in his ability to re-sign Nelson.
Why? Well, just look at recent history! By trading for Nelson, Schneider has extended his streak
of trading for a superstar caliber player on an expiring contract to four-years in a row, and the previous three all signed extensions with Seattle. Who are they?
- Leonard Williams (2023)
- Ernest Jones IV (2024)
- Rashid Shaheed (2025)
And now Quenton Nelson in 2026. Yes, there is of course the possibility Nelson won't re-sign, but Seattle should have the ability to do so with DeMarcus Lawrence set to retire at the end of the season, and the fact they'll probably let Anthony Bradford walk in free agency.
Schneider has never been afraid to make a splash move, and Quenton Nelson is just the latest addition in a long list of big names traded to the Seahawks. Players like Marshawn Lynch in 2010, Duane Brown and Sheldon Richardson in 2017, Quandre Diggs and Jadeveon Clowney in 2019, and Carlos Dunlap in 2020. With the exception of Richardson and Clowney, all of those players would go on to sign extensions with the Seahawks.
Of course, not every move works out the way it was intended. For the sake of fairness, we do feel the need to mention Jimmy Graham and Jamal Adams. However, while those didn't pan out the way anyone had hoped, they're still data points to Schneider's willingness to take big swings.
You win some, you lose some, and fortunately for Seahawks fans, their general manager wins far more often!
