The Seattle Seahawks were concerned about the third cornerback spot after letting Riq Woolen walk this offseason. Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe are slated to start on the boundary. With Nick Emmanwori playing the nickel, the Seahawks' third cornerback isn't a starter, like in most defenses around the league.
Still, it's a valuable spot. Seattle's No. 3 corner is the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency position if Witherspoon or Jobe suffered an injury. It's clearly important enough to have general manager John Schneider racking his brain on securing improvement.
Initially, Nehemiah Pritchett began the offseason as the favorite. At training camp, Noah Igbinoghene was outperforming Pritchett. Now, Igbinoghene has joined the Cleveland Browns' 53-man
roster, and the Seahawks have officially brought in three new cornerbacks.
Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs is on the practice squad, designed as a ramp-up period. The Seahawks traded for undrafted rookie corner Avery Smith, clearly seeing long-term potential in his game. They also officially signed Terrion Arnold, though his future remains murky after being placed on the Commissioner's Exempt list as he continues dealing with an alleged off-field situation.
Diggs, Smith, and possibly Arnold will totally flip the Seahawks' cornerback room on its head. As did Igbinoghene's departure. Diggs is the clear-cut favorite to win Seattle's No. 3 cornerback role.
