Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is among the best in the league. If there's a knock on defensive-minded coaches today, it's often the lack of continuity on offense. Coach Macdonald has had three offensive coordinators in as many campaigns.
The Seahawks were forced to hire another OC this past offseason after Klint Kubiak won the Super Bowl in Seattle and was drawn to the Las Vegas Raiders' head coaching gig. Macdonald oversaw a creative search. He ultimately hired Brian Fleury away from his rival San Francisco 49ers.
The jury remains out on Fleury. The Seahawks have dealt with some difficulties they did not have last season. Losing Kenneth Walker to free agency was a blow, and there have been multiple injuries at running back. Coach
Fleury has navigated the challenges reasonably well.
What's happening in Los Angeles is a reminder that things could have gone significantly worse. Macdonald's old mentor Jim Harbaugh also had to hire a new OC this past offseason. He appointed Mike McDaniel, one of the more sought-after candidates.
It's been a full-blown disaster for the Chargers. They're the NFL's lone winless team at 0-7, once-MVP candidate QB Justin Herbert has seriously regressed, and the offense hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 5.
It serves as a solid reminder that Macdonald seemingly did well when hiring Fleury as OC.
