The bitter rivalry between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers is one of the best displays of controlled violence in all of the NFL. Ever since Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor leveled 49ers tight end Vernon Davis in 2012, these two football teams have defined aggression against each other on the field — and this year’s NFC West clash will be no different.

The Seahawks played perhaps their most physical game of 2026 yet last week against the Los Angeles Chargers. Showing the ability to take the energy level up and hit those notes when necessary will give them confidence entering Sunday’s game.
However, they were suckered into a franchise-record 14 penalties for 150 yards in that game, and won by just one score despite a dominant performance otherwise. They’ll need to be the ones to set and control the temperature in this matchup. The 49ers certainly watched that tape and will be looking to provoke the Seahawks between plays. It’s up to the players to remain stoic.
The 49ers have been known to instigate commotion when coming to Seattle. They’re the ones with revenge on their minds after the Seahawks bested them 13-3 at Levi’s Stadium to win the division, annihilated them 41-6 in Seattle in the divisional round, and returned to Santa Clara to win Super Bowl LX. They’ve been cautious about their quotes this week, but safety Malik Mustapha gave the most revealing look at their mindset in an NFL.com article on Tuesday:
“It’s unspoken,” he said. “Everyone knows what it is. Everyone knows the mindset going into it. We don’t like them, and we have to go after it and get the job done.”
You can expect the sport’s gladiator foundation to shine on Sunday. Just make sure you have your chinstrap buckled.
