Minshew Mania is coming back to the Evergreen State. The Seattle Seahawks are starting Drew Lock in place of the injured Sam Darnold on Sunday. Not only will Seattle not be the only team making a change at quarterback in Week 9, they won't even be the only team playing at Lumen Field to do so! The Arizona Cardinals have announced that longtime veteran backup, and Washington State Cougar legend, Gardner Minshew II will start for them on Sunday.
This will mark the second time this season the Seahawks will face a team starting a backup quarterback in place of the regular starter in his first game. The first was Week 3 against the Washington Commanders. Now it's the Cardinals, who the Seahawks obliterated in Week 2 earlier this year.
Arizona made
the switch to Minshew late in the third quarter last week while trailing 17-3 to the Dallas Cowboys. Their regular starter, Jacoby Brissett, was completely ineffective with this 10-of-23 passing for 119 yards and an interception. Minshew brought a much-needed jolt of energy with Minshew, who thre for 188 yards and three touchdowns in the 33-30 comeback win in overtime.
Seattle is at a rocky point in their title defense season. At 4-4, they are in a position where missing the playoffs entirely could become a very real possibility given how dominant the entire NFC North division has been. The Seahawks now face a Cardinals team that has proven to be more than capable of pulling off shocking road upsets, and now they will start a capable veteran quarterback with little to no film on him. Seattle cannot afford to look past Arizona. They need this win just as much as if it were against San Francisco, Los Angeles or Kansas City.
