Things haven't gone totally according to plan for the 3-3 Seattle Seahawks. They'll head into Sunday Night Football's primetime showdown with the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs at significant risk of falling below .500. Among the better storylines has been the continued play of third-year defensive tackle Byron Murphy II.
Murphy has been excellent for Mike Macdonald's defense line. The 16th overall selection in the 2024 draft has recorded 21 tackles and three sacks through six games. Murphy ranks second on the Seahawks in total pressures with 19, trailing Leonard Williams by just one (20) for the team lead.
Murphy's three sacks is tied for the team lead with blitzing linebacker Ernest Jones IV. The advanced metrics continue painting a rosy picture. Murphy has
posted an 11.6 WIN% as a pass rusher, according to Pro Football Focus. Uchenna Nwosu (13.5%) is the Seahawks' only pass rusher with a better result in that metric.
ESPN Analytics has Murphy with 18 pass-rushing wins this season. That is tied for 7th-best among all NFL defensive tackles. The former Texas Longhorn has a pass-rush-win-rate of 19%, tied for 8th-best.
Murphy is playing excellent football for the Seahawks. Hopefully the rest of the team starts to follow suit soon.
