August 15th, 2026 - The Seattle Seahawks made their defensive star Devon Witherspoon the highest paid cornerback in the history of professional football with a four-year extension worth $132 million dollars, with $101 million fully guaranteed. The title of "highest paid corner ever" was a title Witherspoon proudly held... for about 24 days.
As is par for the course in the NFL these days, the record-setting contracts only remain that way until they are beaten by someone else. They are simply the new bar to cross, which is exactly what happened on the other end of Interstate-90 on Labor Day.
Christian Gonzalez, New England's star cornerback of their own, just inked his record-setting extension to become the most recent highest-paid cornerback in the history
of professional football. The Patriots gave the former Oregon Duck a four-year deal worth $135 million, with $102 million fully guaranteed. Clearly using Witherspoon as the jumping off point, which only makes sense, as both Witherspoon and Gonzalez are represented by WIN Sports Group as their agency.
An appropriately named agency, mind you. WIN Sports group negotiated the historic extensions for Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Devon Witherspoon and now Christian Gonzalez all this summer. Incredible streak of victories, and it's exactly why players like Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is seeking their representation now.
From a Seahawks perspective, there is both some good news and bad news from this extension. The bad news is this means Christian Gonzalez will be available for New England this week during the kick off game in Seattle on Wednesday. There was word that a hold out in Week 1 was possible, but now that he's paid and happy, that's obviously off the table.
The good news, from a big picture perspective, is further reminder the Seahawks were smart to extend Witherspoon now. Seattle still had two more years on his contract and wouldn't have to start negotiating until the end of next year. Instead, they got ahead of everything by getting the job done early. Today's record-setting contract is tomorrow's bargain bin deal. Christian Gonzalez' new deal, that will surely be broken by someone else within the next 12 months, is proof of this.
