Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams recently confirmed that he's held discussions over a contract extension with the team. Williams is currently slated to enter the final year of his contract. Recent extensions around the league have increased the price for a potential extension.
The Tennessee Titans signed Jeffery Simmons to a multi-year extension that pays him a then-highest-paid $35.2 million per season (among defensive tackles). Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Eagles reset the market again by signing Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension worth up to $160 million. Carter will now earn a position-record $38 million per season.
Surely that's music to Williams' ears.
Remember that Williams was recently named the
No. 1 defensive tackle in the entire NFL by ESPN. Coming off a Super Bowl 60 victory, Williams' representation definitely has some leveraging power in negotiations.
Williams turned 32 in June. As dominant as he's been, the Seahawks will prefer to avoid a long-term extension that keeps him under contract until 35-36 years old. A two-year extension worth approximately $70 million would qualify as logical. Williams would earn $35 million per season via such an agreement, placing him among the elite earners at defensive tackle. He'd be the second-highest paid player at his position behind just Carter.
