Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider has once again pulled another rabbit out of his hat. On Tuesday morning, the reigning Executive of the Year made the biggest splash trade of the 2026 regular season by acquiring superstar left guard Quenton Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts. Nelson has been with the Colts his entire since being drafted in 2018. During this time he has been a three-time All-Pro and has been named to the Pro Bowl in each season.
The Seahawks are giving up a 2027 third round pick and a 2028 fifth round pick in order to acquire Nelson's services. Seattle will also take on Nelson's remaining salary of $9.7 million. There is some risk, of course, as Nelson is on an expiring contract. He will be a free agent at the conclusion
of the 2026 season. However, I don't believe John Schneider would have made this move if he did not feel he could keep Nelson beyond this year. Schneider has traded for players on expiring contracts before, like Leonard Williams and Rashid Shaheed. Both of those stars got extensions with Seattle.
I would like to point out that we at Seahawks Wire lowkey predicted this. Last week when the Colts fired their general manager Chris Ballard and replaced him with assistant GM Ed Dodds, I wrote an article about how he has a connection with the Seahawks. Dodds was an employee with Seattle from 2007-2016 and even climbed as high as the senior personnel executive position. I also wrote about how Dodds' relationship with Schneider could perhaps be used to Seattle's benefit by manufacturing a trade to get a player like... Quenton Nelson.
You may refer to me as "Kolestradamus."
The question now becomes "what does the Seahawks' line now look like?" Nelson is primarily a left guard, which is currently the position Grey Zabel plays. Part of why Zabel was made a first round pick last year was his versatility, and the ability to play any position on the line. Do the Seahawks move him inside? Or do they move him to the right guard spot? Doesn't seem like they will demote Anthony Bradford immediately after getting him back and seeing how well he played against the Chiefs.
We at Seahawks Wire will continue to monitor this developing story.
