The Seattle Seahawks have finally placed the final piece of their offseason puzzle in emphatic fashion. On Saturday morning, the day of their first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Seahawks finally agreed to terms on a historic and massive contract extension.
According to NFL insiders Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport, and Jordan Schultz, Devon Witherspoon will be receiving a four-year extension worth up to $132 million dollars. Out of this $132 million, $101 million of it is fully guaranteed! This contract has fulfilled the predictions of Albert Breer, who said it would reset the cornerback market, and Ian Rapoport who said it would make him the highest paid in the league at his position.

Devon Witherspoon will be a Seahawk for many seasons to come. He has two years left on his current rookie deal, and now this four-year extension is tacked on the end. He is now contractually tied to Seattle through the 2031 campaign, similar to Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Seattle worked hard this offseason to lock up two of their most foundational roster pieces, with one on each side of the ball. Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba received his fortune in May with a four-year extension worth up to $168.6 million to be the highest paid wide receiver in NFL history. Now, his fellow 2023 first round selection in Devon Witherspoon gets to make a similar claim among cornerbacks.
We knew the price tag for Witherspoon was going to be astronomical, especially after the Cleveland Browns made Denzel Ward the highest paid cornerback in NFL history (for the second time in his career) at the end of July. That deal gave Ward an annual salary of $31.1 million per year. Ward kept this particular crown for a little over two weeks before being eclipsed by Witherspoon.
In all likelihood, Witherspoon will keep that crown for a similar, if not shorter, amount of time. Because his counterpart on the east coast, Christian Gonzales of the New England Patriots, is currently negotiating his record-setting contract extension. Now that Witherspoon has his number set in stone, Gonzales now has his target to beat.
And beat it he probably will, as both Witherspoon and Gonzales are represented by the same agency. This was yet another win for the appropriately named WIN Sports Group, who also negotiated Jaxon Smith-Njigba's contract! With this in mind, it's no wonder why Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua recently joined this agency himself.
