The Seattle Seahawks lost a critical divisional game at home in Week 5. They were defeated 32-29 by the San Francisco 49ers. A three-point loss was arguably decided by the turnover battle.
The Seahawks lost the turnover battle 4-3
. The offense totally let the defense down. It's unfathomable that the defense forced three turnovers, and yet the offense committed one more turnover than Kyle Shanahan's 49ers did.Quarterback Sam Darnold was 18-of-29 for 195 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. His first pick was a contested sideline throw on the opening drive intercepted by 49ers cornerback Renardo Green. Darnold's second interception was an ill-advised throw at the beginning of the third quarter. He was targeting the middle of the field,
but Green easily undercut the route for his second interception.
The Seahawks' running back woes also continued. Both Emanuel Wilson and George Holani lost fumbles. Backup running backs continue committing turnovers for this Seahawks offense.
Protecting the football is pivotal in critical division showdowns. Neither the Seahawks nor the 49ers successfully did that on Sunday, but the Seahawks' ball security was slightly worse and it made the difference. Brian Fleury's offense needs to start protecting the football at a far more efficient clip.
