Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold did not play up to par in the team’s 32-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.
Darnold deserves a “C+” for his performance in the loss to the 49ers, as he made several impactful throws but was ultimately weighed down by turnovers and missed opportunities.
Darnold completed 18 of 29 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, adding one carry for five yards. His 16-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba gave Seattle a 23-21 lead in the third quarter, and he helped the Seahawks move into field-goal range on multiple occasions. Still, he was sacked five times and finished with a passer rating of 64.6.
Darnold’s play resulted in a loss, and his two interceptions were the biggest reason
his grade fell. His first pick came on a short pass attempt intended for Smith-Njigba in the first quarter, while his second came on a deep pass intended for Elijah Arroyo in the third quarter that shifted momentum back to San Francisco. His 195 passing yards also fell short of the 200-yard marker, as well as the standard Seattle needed in a game decided by three points.
Despite the mistakes, Darnold kept Seattle competitive until the final snap. He will look to bounce back in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos.
