WATCH:
There’s only one eligible receiver on this play, so the Seahawks were quite obviously going to Horton if he was open. This was a run-pass option play that successfully made the Chargers choose where to focus their defensive attention. They had Horton one-on-one against a defender playing six yards off on the goal line, and Horton ran his route uncontested. If there was a safety helping over the top, he would’ve been able to try to jump the route, tackle Horton, or hit him and jar
the ball loose. They all filled down into the box and played the run, so the single pass was wide open from the moment the play began.
Horton suffered a shin injury in early November of last season and was out from Week 10 on. This TD is the culmination of the role he’s been slowly carving out in the offense since returning last week. It will be fun to see him on the field with fellow receivers Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp more as he continues to acclimate.
