Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle J.R. Singleton made a strong case to the team’s scouting and personnel brass on Sunday, leading the team with ten total and eight solo tackles. The defensive line room is already incredibly deep, but he can find his way onto the active roster at some point during the regular season.
DT depth is particularly hard to come by in the NFL, but the Seahawks seem to keep stockpiling it the last couple years. They might also have the option to trade Brandon Pili if any of Singleton, Uso Seumalo, Deven Eastern, or Bubba Thomas push him for the second string spot opposite Rylie Mills and starters Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy II. Despite less draft pedigree, Singleton has the traits to emerge from that pack over the next
week and a half.
He was a co-captain at Iowa State in 2024, where he set career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, and quarterback hurries. He might have finished college still improving with his best football ahead of him in the NFL. Seattle signed him as an undrafted free agent for rookie minicamp on May 2, 2025, and has kept him around since, only releasing him August 26th of last year to sign him to the practice squad this year.
He offers a similar size profile to Murphy, listed at 6’1” 299. Having been around the building and been productive in both college and preseason, he’s earned consideration to be a fill-in at that wider-bodied, double team anchor role when needed.
There’s been surprisingly little buzz about Singleton’s preseason Week 2 effort, but Hawk Blogger did commend his preseason effort in Tennessee, and had him as a practice squad/roster bubble candidate as of his livestream Tuesday morning. It might be short-lived, but let’s see some more appreciation for J.R. Singleton’s monster preseason right now.
