The Seattle Seahawks shook the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday morning by announcing Drew Lock will start at quarterback for their Week 9 game against the Arizona Cardinals. This will be Lock's second start of the season, and his second time playing the Cardinals this season. The reason Lock is back in the starting role is because regular starter Sam Darnold apparently injured his quad
late in the blowout loss to Chicago on Monday night.Well it turns out the rest of the Seahawks' quarterback room is hurting because Drew Lock is also dealing with a lingering injury. Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said in a press conference:
"Drew's still working back from his elbow, so we'll work the process this week... he's able to throw. How much, we're working through
that right now."
Drew Lock injured his elbow during a rainy practice a couple of weeks ago, per Gregg Bell. This is why Lock has been made inactive for the past few games, only suiting up to fill the emergency third string quarterback role. Macdonald did not rule out the Seahawks signing another quarterback to the roster, even with Jalen Milroe getting snaps at practice this week, but it does not sound like Darnold will land on injured reserve.
At 4-4, the Seahawks' season already feels like it's getting dangerously close to life support. Especially since the NFC North is likely going to send at least three teams to the playoffs, or perhaps all of them, as all four teams either have six or five wins to their resumes. Seattle needs a win over Arizona on Sunday, then be able to beat Klint Kubiak's Raiders the next week before their Week 11 bye.
The Seahawks have proven they can absolutely dominate the Cardinals, as they blew them out 31-7 in Week 2. But this Cardinals team has shown they're more than capable of playing the role of spoiler. Arizona upset the Rams on the road earlier this season, and are coming off a thrilling overtime comeback win over the Cowboys last weekend. Seattle cannot afford to overlook their division rivals.
