The Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers produced a start to their game in Week 4 that has not been seen in decades.
According to ESPN and the Elias Sports Bureau, the Week 4 matchup between Seattle and Los Angeles was the first time that two interceptions were thrown on the first two plays of the game since at least 1978.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert opened the game by throwing an interception into the hands of Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. Herbert’s pick handed Seattle its first drive quickly in the first quarter.
The Seahawks gave the ball back to the Chargers just as quickly. On Seattle’s first offensive snap, quarterback Sam Darnold threw an interception that was reeled in by Chargers star Tuli Tuipulotu. The back-to-back turnovers
created one of the league’s most unusual opening sequences in quite some time.
Los Angeles converted the early back-and-forth into a field goal and a 3-0 lead on the ensuing drive. The Chargers gave the Seahawks a tough battle in the game, but Seattle responded well, eventually pulling away with a 30-23 win on the evening.
