The Seattle Seahawks have been dealt a bizarre curveball to begin their 2026 season related to quarterback Sam Darnold. On the fifth play of the season opener, Darnold exited the game with what was initially reported as a hip injury. Following the game, head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed he did not suffer a fracture. After more tests were conducted, it was determined Darnold had a "glute" injury as reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Overall, the Seahawks believe they dodged a bullet with their quarterback's health.
Seattle gave an injury update for Darnold on Monday, and the positive news seemed to continue. John Boyle of the Seahawks' official website is reporting from Macdonald himself that Darnold has a "very unique" soft-tissue injury.
At this moment, the team is not concerned with this being a long-term injury, despite there not being a concrete timeline. Seattle was fortunate to avoid any further injury to Darnold's hip socket.
For now, it is the Drew Lock show. He will be the man under center for a road game against the Arizona Cardinals, who kicked off Week 1 with a shocking 26-14 road upset over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Seahawks are gearing up for life without Darnold for at least one week, perhaps more, with hopes he could be back sooner rather than later.
