One of the biggest battles at Seattle Seahawks training camp this year is occurring at running back. The team lost Super Bowl 60 MVP Kenneth Walker III to free agency, and Zach Charbonnet is recovering from a season-ending ACL injury suffered during the playoffs. The healthy backs are competing for early-season reps.
Everyone expects first-round pick Jadarian Price to run away with the role, but the coaches are making him earn it at training camp. The staff reminded everyone that this is a legitimate position battle. Veteran free-agent signing Emanuel Wilson worked with the first-team offense at Monday's practice, according to Gregg Bell.
"Emanuel Wilson, signed in free agency from Green Bay this spring to a one-year contract at just above the
league minimum salary, got scrimmage plays with the starting offense in 11 on 11 for the first time Monday," Bell wrote after practice. "The coaches’ evaluation of Price, Holani, Wilson and the running-back situation post-Kenneth Walker signing this spring with Kansas City is so early. And so inconclusive."
Wilson rushed for 496 yards and three touchdowns in a reserve role with the Green Bay Packers last season. Bell is correct that the Seahawks remain in the earliest stages imaginable of evaluating their new-look running back room. Price and Holani remain the favorites to begin the campaign as the primary ball carriers, but Wilson is receiving opportunities to work his way into the rotation.
