Simplifying the offense helped Clemson find some momentum Saturday against Virginia Tech. The frustration for Dabo Swinney was that his staff did not provide those answers consistently enough.
After the Tigers’ 20-16 home loss, Swinney questioned how Clemson’s coaches handled an offense that finished with 288 yards and went 3-for-14 on third down. He believed the players’ effort warranted more support from the sideline.
“I just don’t think we helped them enough to win the game with some decisions and play calls,” Swinney said. “Those kids played their butts off.”
The clearest example of what worked came after halftime. Swinney asked offensive coordinator Chad Morris to reduce the reads for freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds and lean more on designed
runs.
Clemson immediately became more productive, opening the second half with three straight scoring possessions. The Tigers gained 146 yards in the third quarter, getting a 16-yard Reynolds touchdown run and two Nolan Hauser field goals to take a 13-10 lead.
“We took a little bit off the quarterback and he had some direct runs,” Swinney said. “We got into a good rhythm.”
That success proved temporary. Clemson ended its final three possessions with two punts and a turnover on downs, leaving little room for error despite a strong defensive performance.
Virginia Tech managed just 234 total yards and 70 rushing yards, but the Tigers still fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Reynolds finished with 153 passing yards on 20-of-26 passing while rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown. For Swinney, the larger issue was how much Clemson left unfinished around him.
“I thought our team played their tails off and competed and deserved a lot better,” he said.
