Dabo Swinney held the microphone on Monday night, along with every opportunity to end the Clemson Tigers' quarterback mystery. He chose to keep fans spiraling through whether Vizzina is truly a good option.
With Clemson preparing to open its season Saturday night at LSU, Swinney declined to publicly choose between senior Christopher Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds during his weekly radio show, "Tiger Hour."
“We’re gonna run somebody out there,” Swinney said.
I mean, I guess he answered the big question. Just not in the way Tiger fans would have wanted.
Swinney praised offensive coordinator Chad Morris and quarterbacks coach Tajh Boyd for placing both players in difficult situations throughout camp. Clemson has gathered all the practice evidence
it can, but its coach acknowledged that a controlled environment can only reveal so much.
The next stage of the evaluation will apparently occur with more than 100,000 people watching in Tiger Stadium.
That leaves open the possibility that Clemson will use both quarterbacks against LSU, although Swinney did not indicate that either player would receive a specialized package. When asked whether the Tigers had designed separate packages for Vizzina and Reynolds, his response remained simple.
“Whoever’s out there has got to run the offense,” Swinney said.
Vizzina appeared most likely to receive the opening assignment. Swinney placed him in the “pole position” entering the competition, and the fourth-year quarterback possesses Clemson’s only meaningful college experience at the position.
He has completed 64 of 105 career passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception across 14 appearances. His lone start came against SMU last season, when he threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in a 35-24 loss. Vizzina became Clemson’s first quarterback since Deshaun Watson in 2014 to throw at least three touchdown passes in his starting debut.
Reynolds offers a considerably different gamble. The true freshman has never taken a college snap, but his dual-threat ability has prevented Vizzina from walking uncontested into the job. Reynolds threw for 2,238 yards and 22 touchdowns as a high school junior while adding 1,426 rushing yards and 19 scores. A hamstring injury erased most of his senior season, but his athletic ceiling has remained evident since arriving at Clemson.
One good game against SMU proves nothing. That uncertainty explains why Swinney may want both quarterbacks available before placing Clemson’s offense entirely in either player’s hands.
The question that has to be running through our heads now is: how close, really, is this quarterback battle? Is not revealing the starting quarterback Swinney's superstition, or is it just the fact that the two have that small of a distance between them?
If it's the latter, Reynolds might be a real product at the quarterback position, or Vizzina might be a huge bust.
