Clemson will turn to Christopher Vizzina to lead its offense when the Tigers open the 2026 season in Baton Rouge.
Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday that Vizzina has earned the starting quarterback job for Saturday night’s matchup with LSU, giving the senior the first opportunity to replace longtime starter Cade Klubnik.
“He’s earned that,” Swinney said.
Vizzina entered the offseason with the advantage in Clemson’s quarterback competition after spending three seasons behind Klubnik. True freshman Tait Reynolds made the decision more interesting than Clemson may have anticipated, separating himself from the other quarterbacks and continuing to push Vizzina throughout preseason camp.
Although Vizzina will take the first snap against LSU, Reynolds could
still have a role in the opener. Asked whether the freshman is likely to play Saturday, Swinney responded, “It’s likely.”
The Clemson coach also made clear that earning the Week 1 start does not guarantee Vizzina the job indefinitely.
“But I can’t give him a lifetime contract,” Swinney said.
His message for keeping the position was even simpler.
“Go out there and win some games.”
Vizzina brings more experience into the season than a typical first-year starter. He has appeared in 14 games during his Clemson career, completing 61 percent of his passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed for 109 yards and another score.

His biggest opportunity came last October when Klubnik was sidelined by an ankle injury. Vizzina started against SMU and completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in Clemson’s 35-24 loss.
Now the former four-star prospect gets his first chance to begin a season as Clemson’s starter, and his first assignment will come in one of college football’s toughest environments.
Clemson and LSU kick off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, with the game airing nationally on ABC.
