After a disastrous season-opening performance against LSU, Clemson football must turn the corner and shift its attention to Week 2. For the Tigers, that involves a matchup against one of the two non-power conference teams on their 2026 schedule: the Georgia Southern Eagles.
Saturday's matchup is the home opener for Clemson (1-0) at Memorial Stadium. The only other head-to-head meeting between the Tigers and Eagles (1-0) was in 2018, a 38-7 Clemson victory in Week 3 that was part of the Tigers' 15-0 national championship season.
While quite a lot has changed since then, as was reinforced over the weekend in Baton Rouge, Clemson cannot afford to wallow in one game. Dabo Swinney was correct about one thing at his weekly Tuesday press conference:
the schedule-makers give the Tigers the same 12 games overall as they do everyone else.
As for Georgia Southern, the Eagles opened their season with a 31-0 shutout win over Charleston Southern on Saturday.
Quarterback Max Johnson -- yes, the seventh-year college football player who is now 25 years old and with his fourth different college football team since committing to LSU way back in 2018 -- threw for 281 yards and a touchdown on 28-of-39 passing in his Eagles debut.
Georgia Southern is led by Clay Helton, the former Southern California head coach who is now in his fifth season in Statesboro.
