Five months after Clemson announced doctors had found a mass in Hevin Brown-Shuler’s chest, the Tigers defensive tackle finished chemotherapy Thursday. Surrounded by family, friends, coaches and teammates, Brown-Shuler rang the bell marking the end of his treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma.
FOX Carolina shared a short video of the moment. Brown-Shuler walked toward the bell in a purple shirt made for the occasion, pulled his hood over his head and briefly covered his face as the room around him cheered. He then stepped forward and rang it.

Clemson announced Brown-Shuler’s diagnosis on May 19. He said at the time that the news was difficult to receive, but doctors had given him a “very good” prognosis. The diagnosis ruled him out for the 2026 season before it began, though Brown-Shuler made his intended destination clear from the start.
“I can’t wait to run down that hill and touch Howard’s Rock again for the 2027 football season,” Brown-Shuler said in May.
Brown-Shuler has continued attending defensive tackle meetings, training at the football facility, participating in Tiger Walk and supporting his teammates from the sideline during home games. Before Clemson’s September trip to California, the player undergoing chemotherapy was the one sending his head coach an inspirational message.
Swinney said Tuesday that Brown-Shuler has hit each benchmark in his recovery, although one follow-up scan remains after his final treatment. The Clemson coach and his wife, Kathleen, planned to attend Thursday’s bell-ringing ceremony with members of the team.

Swinney also said ESPN’s College GameDay plans to feature Brown-Shuler and former South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, who is battling Stage 4 colorectal cancer, ahead of this season’s Palmetto Bowl. Brown-Shuler’s comeback still has another chapter ahead, but Thursday brought the moment everyone around him had waited months to see.
