Cleveland needed someone to step up with the game on the line Sunday, and former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson answered the call.
Trailing Tampa Bay in the fourth quarter, Watson put together the kind of drive the Browns had been waiting to see from him. He converted four third downs before finding Blake Whiteheart for a 17-yard touchdown, putting Cleveland ahead 23-19 with less than four minutes remaining.
The Browns’ defense took care of the rest, eventually ending Tampa Bay’s final possession on downs following a lengthy weather delay.
Watson had already helped Cleveland climb out of an earlier deficit, connecting with rookie Denzel Boston on a 55-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
It all added up to one of the former Clemson star’s strongest
performances since arriving in Cleveland.
Watson completed 80 percent of his passes, finishing with 238 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. He also contributed 22 rushing yards as the Browns improved to 1-1.
The outing was particularly meaningful considering what Watson has endured over the past two years. Multiple Achilles injuries kept him out of action for an extended period, including the entire 2025 campaign.

After a difficult season opener against Jacksonville, Watson showed considerably more consistency against the Buccaneers, helping first-year head coach Todd Monken earn his first NFL victory.
For the former Tigers’ standout, it was also his first win under center since September 2024.
Cleveland will now attempt to move above .500 when the Carolina Panthers visit in Week 3.
