The Clemson Tigers are hoping the start of ACC play begins a new stretch of play and a marked improvement after the first two games of the 2026 college football season. Clemson faces the North Carolina Tar Heels at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
Clemson (1-1) was mauled by LSU in a disastrous season-opening beatdown in Baton Rouge, then struggled in last week's nonconference matchup
against Group of Six foe Georgia Southern. While the Tigers never trailed, the play of the offensive line was ineffective and yielded 11 tackles for loss, two false starts and four holding penalties. Clemson has allowed more tackles for loss (21.5) than any other team in the nation through the first two weeks, earning a blistering critique by former Tiger and current
ACC Network analyst Eric Mac Lain and others.
At quarterback, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney now turns to true freshman Tait Reynolds, who will make his first career start Saturday after an injury to Christopher Vizzina in the first quarter last week. Reynolds, a 19-year-old recruit out of Arizona, was 16-of-27 for 178 yards against Georgia Southern.
North Carolina (2-0) pulled a surprising 15-10 upset win over TCU in their season opener in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 29 before easily taking care of East Tennessee State in a 35-3 win in Chapel Hill. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 244 yards, and tailback Demon June rushed for three touchdowns in the win.
Two coaching legends in Swinney and Bill Belichick will meet for the second straight season Saturday. It comes less than a year after the Tigers routed the Tar Heels, 38-10, in Chapel Hill.

FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete."
