At this point last season, Clemson was 3-4 and headed toward arguably the worst season of Dabo Swinney’s coaching tenure. The Tigers were among college football’s biggest disappointments. This year hasn’t brought a complete turnaround, but Clemson has at least kept itself in the mix through the first half of the season.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich recently broke down the College Football Playoff bubble, placing Clemson in the “too early to tell” category. I agree with that assessment, and Clemson fans should find some encouragement in it. There are still reasons for skepticism, but the Tigers have given themselves something to play for.
One of Clemson’s biggest problems last season was its inability to beat comparable opponents. Losing to LSU is relatively
understandable. Falling to Syracuse, Duke, SMU and Georgia Tech is much harder to excuse. Those losses turned a disappointing season into something considerably worse.
So far, Clemson has avoided that pattern. The Tigers haven’t suffered any of those frustrating unranked losses, and their remaining schedule offers a manageable path forward.
That doesn’t mean it will be easy. Virginia Tech and Duke are solid teams, and games against Florida State and South Carolina are never automatic. Clemson still needs more consistency, particularly offensively, to make the most of that opportunity.

But the Tigers have a realistic chance in every remaining matchup. If their recent problems resurface, they could lose four of their final six games without shocking anyone. However, finishing 6-0 wouldn’t require a stunning upset, either, and that run could put Clemson in position to reach the College Football Playoff.
The Tigers haven’t shown enough to make either outcome feel certain. That uncertainty can be frustrating, but it also means their biggest goals remain within reach. It truly is “too early to tell.”
