Clemson entered the 2026 season needing a strong response after a disappointing year. Instead, one night in Baton Rouge immediately brought more questions about the direction of Dabo Swinney’s program.
LSU overwhelmed Clemson 51-10 on Saturday, handing Swinney the worst loss of his head-coaching career. The Tigers were outgained 644-145 and managed only eight first downs while LSU piled up 38.
That performance gave ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum plenty of ammunition.
“He cannot salvage this program,” Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show.
Finebaum argued that Clemson has fallen into the second tier of college football and said “the game has passed him by.” While he made clear he was not calling for Clemson to fire Swinney, he suggested the longtime
Tigers coach may be better off looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
“I’m telling you, Dabo – get out. Get out while you can. Get out before your program literally goes down in utter flames,” Finebaum said.
The criticism comes after Clemson was never competitive against Lane Kiffin’s LSU team. The Bayou Bengals led 31-3 at halftime after holding a 336-54 advantage in total yardage through two quarters.

Swinney did not attempt to soften the performance afterward, admitting Clemson “got our ass kicked” and calling the showing embarrassing.
“The best thing about that one is it’s over,” Swinney said.
Finebaum has taken plenty of shots at Swinney over the years, but his latest comments were less about one bad Saturday and more about whether Clemson can still return to the level it once occupied under its longtime coach.
