What is the story about?

A big upset in the ACC during Week 9 of the 2026 college football season saw a top contender for a spot in the conference championship game fall in a stunning loss.

The SMU Mustangs fell in a last-second 30-27 loss to the Syracuse Orange at JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday. The Mustangs' loss was their second in ACC play this season and muddies SMU's path a bit to the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte on Dec. 5.

The top-ranked Miami Hurricanes, ranked No. 1 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25, avoided a similar fate on the road against Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC had to attempt three onside kicks after pushing Mario Cristobal's team to the brink before the Canes escaped Chapel Hill with a 38-35 win.

Elsewhere in the ACC,

the Wake Forest Demon Deacons kept rolling with a statement 51-7 win over Tony Elliott's Virginia Cavaliers, last year's ACC title game runner-up.

Coach Jake Dickert's Deacs ran their win streak to five games after amassing 538 yards of total offense in Saturday's rout of the Hoos in Winston-Salem behind three rushing touchdowns from Ty Clark III, and a touchdown pass from UNC transfer quarterback Gio Lopez.

After a 2-3 start, Jeff Brohm's Louisville Cardinals reeled off their third straight win and are back in the ACC picture. Lincoln Kienholz threw three touchdown passes in the Cards' 52-24 rout of Stanford in Week 9.

As teams fight for a berth in Charlotte and a chance to take down unbeaten Miami, which has only three conference games remaining after Week 10's heavyweight clash with Notre Dame in South Bend, here's a look at this week's ACC standings entering a pivotal week in college football.
