The Clemson Tigers head into the second half of the 2026 college football season with two losses and the mindset of going 1-0 every week.
That's the mantra of Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, whose teams sits at 4-2 and 2-1 in the ACC. The Tigers host the Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2, 2-2) in a critical prime-time matchup in Week 8 at Clemson Memorial Stadium.
Clemson defeated Charleston Southern, 37-0, in Week 7 behind a defense that yielded only 76 yards of total offense and a rushing attack that ran for 231 yards. Chris Johnson Jr. had two touchdowns, and Gideon Davidson led the Tigers' ground game with 59 yards on 13 carries.
Tigers receivers hurt themselves with some costly drops in the game, which is something Swinney has repeatedly highlighted this
week. Quarterback Tait Reynolds finished 17 of 26 for 127 passing yards in the true freshman's fourth start at quarterback.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 34-24 win over Georgia Tech in Blacksburg. Hokies quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the win. He leads the ACC in passing yards with 1,984 through seven games. Hokies leading rusher Jeffrey Overton is averaging six yards per carry.
Coach James Franklin's team ranks 28th nationally in total offense, good for sixth in the ACC. The Hokies are 32nd nationally in total defense, fifth-best in the conference.
Clemson is 110th nationally in total offense with 340.7 yards per game, second to last among ACC teams and ahead of only North Carolina. The Tigers are 46th nationally in total defense, which ranks 10th in the ACC.
Will Clemson football beat Virginia Tech? ESPN's final score prediction
Ahead of Clemson-Virginia Tech, ESPN's Bill Connelly predicted the final score using his popular SP+ metrics. Connelly has the Hokies winning by three points, which goes against oddsmakers' 2.5 spread favoring the Tigers.
Connelly's final score prediction: Virginia Tech 26, Clemson 23.
He gives the Hokies a win probability of 56%.
Where Clemson football sits in ESPN SP+ rankings entering Week 8
Clemson is No. 56 in the ESPN SP+ team rankings, up five spots from last week.
The Tigers have an overall rating of 4.0, up from 2.2 a week ago. Clemson is one spot below ACC rival Florida State (4.9) and one spot ahead of UCF in ESPN's team rankings.
To break down Clemson's rating by unit, SP+ gives the Tigers a 23.1 rating on offense (No. 98 nationally, down one spot from last week) and a 19.5 rating on defense, which is 25th nationally and is up five spots from before the Tigers' win over Charleston Southern. In special teams, Clemson has a 0.3 rating, which ranks 20th in the nation.
Virginia Tech is No. 40 in the SP+ team rankings with an overall rating of 8.9, one spot below the Oregon State Beavers and one spot ahead of the Baylor Bears. The metrics give the Hokies a 32.7 rating on offense that's No. 36 nationally, a 23.4 rating on defense that's No. 43 in the nation, and a minus-0.3 rating in special teams (No. 112).
What are ESPN SP+ rankings?
According to Connelly, SP+ is "simply a measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football. If you're lucky or unimpressive in a win, your rating will probably fall. If you're strong and unlucky in a loss, it will probably rise."
"SP+ is not a résumé ranking, so it does not automatically give credit for big wins or particularly brave scheduling -- no good predictive system does," he adds.
