Ashton Hampton is giving Clemson a chance to extend its tradition of producing first-round NFL talent.
Two of ESPN’s leading draft analysts view the junior as a potential top-10 pick in 2027, with Field Yates placing him sixth on his prospect board and Mel Kiper Jr. ranking him eighth overall. Kiper also has Hampton second among draft-eligible cornerbacks.
That attention reflects how Hampton has performed against challenging competition, even as Clemson has struggled in their biggest games.
During the Tigers’ loss to Miami, Hampton limited star receiver Malachi Toney to eight yards on one catch across three targets. His season totals include nine pass breakups and an interception through five games.
For Yates, the appeal extends beyond those numbers.
Discussing Hampton on ESPN’s First Draft show, he emphasized the cornerback’s strength, confidence and ability to contest passes while taking on an opponent’s top receiver.
“Unafraid of taking on your best wide receiver in man-to-man coverage,” Yates said. “It’s pretty clean here across the board.”
Kiper’s assessment also centered on Hampton’s competitiveness.

“He’s got that cornerback mentality that he loves that challenge,” Kiper said.
Hampton arrived at Clemson as a four-star recruit and quickly earned a place in the secondary. After receiving Freshman All-America recognition in 2024, he became a full-time starter last season and finished with 47 tackles and 11 pass breakups.
His next decision could carry significant implications for Clemson’s defense. Hampton is eligible to enter the draft after this season, and Yates indicated he expects the cornerback to make that jump.
With both analysts already placing him near the top of their boards, Hampton is building a strong case to do so.
