Matt Luke just said to the media Clemson has no regrets about failing to add an experienced offensive lineman through the transfer portal. I disagree.
That does not mean Clemson could have snapped its fingers and forced a veteran tackle to move to Death Valley. The transfer portal is not like shopping on Amazon Prime. Coaches cannot select an experienced lineman, click “add to cart," and expect him to arrive before spring practice.
Players have their own priorities. Money, playing time, geography, relationships, and scheme all influence their decisions. Clemson could have done everything right with an individual player and still lost his recruitment.
Clemson OL coach Matt Luke says they looked at a "few guys" out of the transfer portal this offseason,
but it "didn't work out." He says he doesn't have any regrets about that, though -- Dabo Swinney has said the same thing. Luke on current group: "We're growing together"

But missing one target is recruiting. Missing every single target without finding a contingency is a failure.
That distinction matters because Clemson’s current offensive-line crisis did not come out of nowhere. The warning signs were already there in 2025, when Clemson’s rushing production fell from 173.4 yards per game the previous season to 121.5. Those numbers certainly did not suggest Clemson was entering the offseason from a position of strength up front. The Tigers then lost multiple veterans, expected to hand the offense to first-year starter Christopher Vizzina, and faced LSU and Miami, which ar obviously two of the country’s nastiest defensive fronts within their first five games.
If Clemson was going to attack one position aggressively through the portal, the offensive line should have been the unquestioned priority.
Swinney and Luke are telling slightly different stories
Dabo Swinney and Luke did not publicly argue with each other this week, but their answers placed different emphasis on Clemson’s portal approach. When asked whether Clemson considered adding offensive linemen or felt comfortable with its existing roster, Swinney answered, “Both.”
He then acknowledged that Clemson evaluated “two or three” offensive linemen but did not land them.
Luke confirmed that Clemson pursued help but rejected the idea that the staff should regret coming away empty-handed.
“I don’t think there was regret,” Luke said. “We obviously looked at some guys and it didn’t work out.”
That is where I disagree with him. Swinney’s answer acknowledges that Clemson saw the need. Luke’s answer attempts to treat the failure to fill it as an acceptable part of the developmental plan.
If Clemson truly believed its young players were unquestionably "ready," it would not have pursued veteran linemen in the first place. Looking at multiple transfers shows that the staff recognized the risk. It wanted another proven option, failed to secure one, and then entered the season without a veteran fallback.
There is nothing wrong with admitting that did not work.
Luke can still believe in Grant Wise, Easton Ware, Gavin Blanchard and Clemson’s other young linemen. I actually love Wise and think he is going to be a hit, but the kid was playing high school football a year ago. Regretting the lack of a portal addition would not mean throwing him or anyone else in that room under the bus. It would mean acknowledging that asking such a young group to protect an inexperienced quarterback and eventually a true freshman against elite defensive fronts created an avoidable level of risk.
Development and reinforcement are not mutually exclusive terms. Clemson could have invested in its future while also protecting the guys it has currently.
The results make “no regrets” difficult to defend
Through five games, Clemson has allowed 42 tackles for loss, the most in the ACC and 136th nationally. Its 17 sacks allowed rank next to last in the conference and tied for 129th nationally. The Tigers also rank 13th in the ACC in rushing yards per game and yards per carry.
The Hurricanes recorded nine tackles for loss, sacked Tait Reynolds six times and pressured him more than 20 times. Five of those sacks came before halftime.
Clemson produced 93 rushing yards before sack yardage was deducted, but that does not erase what happened in protection. Reynolds regularly reached the top of his drop with the pocket already collapsing around him.
Luke is correct that Clemson has faced two elite defensive fronts. Miami leads the country in rushing defense, and LSU ranks near the top nationally in multiple defensive categories.
Clemson knew LSU and Miami were on the schedule. Those games were not surprise additions in September. The entire reason to pursue experienced linemen was to prepare for opponents capable of exposing young players before they were ready.
Saying the schedule becomes easier does not resolve the larger problem, either. Clemson is supposed to build an offensive line capable of competing against playoff-caliber opponents, not merely one that can survive the softer portion of an ACC schedule.
Clemson had experienced options on its radar
Again, none of this proves Clemson football could have landed these players. We do not know every behind the scenes conversation, financial consideration, or personal preference involved in those recruitments. It does, however, prove that experienced players existed at Clemson’s positions of need.
Lance Heard is the clearest example of what Clemson is missing.
The former LSU and Tennessee tackle entered the portal with 24 career starts, more than 1,700 snaps and only three sacks allowed. Clemson pursued him, but Heard ultimately transferred to Kentucky.
On Saturday, Heard earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week after Kentucky’s comeback victory at South Carolina. He recorded five knockdown blocks, committed no penalties and allowed no sacks. Kentucky’s only rushing touchdown went directly through his position at left tackle.

Would Heard have automatically fixed Clemson’s entire offensive line? Of course not. He also would not have directly answered every question at right guard and right tackle.
But adding a proven SEC tackle would have given Luke flexibility. Clemson could have stabilized one position, rearranged the remaining pieces and avoided relying so heavily on inexperienced players across the entire unit.
Johnnie Brown III presented another possibility. Brown visited Clemson after starting all 13 games for Georgia Southern in 2025. He played 828 offensive snaps, earned third-team All-Sun Belt honors and demonstrated the ability to play both tackle positions.
He eventually committed to Louisville, where he has played right guard, the exact position at which Clemson is now making another change.
Emmanuel “Kojo” Poku was another experienced option. Poku scheduled a Clemson visit but committed to South Carolina before making the trip. He arrived with 26 career starts at East Carolina, including 13 starts and 975 snaps at right guard last season. He earned second-team All-AAC honors before becoming South Carolina’s starting right guard.
My main criticism is about urgency, not player choice
It would be unfair to claim Clemson simply did not try. Swinney and Luke both confirmed that the staff pursued multiple players, like the guys mentioned above, and recruiting efforts are not always visible publicly.
But “we tried” cannot be the end of the evaluation.
How early did Clemson identify its targets, how wide was the board, and what happened after the first options committed elsewhere? Where were the third, fourth, and fifth experienced alternatives? Clemson could not force anyone to commit, but an offensive-line search cannot end after two or three names when the program is replacing multiple veterans and preparing to start an inexperienced quarterback in Christopher Vizzina. We cannot prove that Luke and Swinney privately disagreed, but their answers raise the question. Swinney acknowledged that Clemson wanted veteran help, while Luke insisted there was nothing to regret about failing to land it. At what point did standing pat become preferable to expanding the search? Clemson did not need a future first round pick; all it needed was somebody capable of providing experience and competition instead of cycling young linemen and hoping one would stick. The search ended without an answer, and Reynolds has absorbed 16 sacks through five games.
Those are all fair questions because a serious portal plan needs more than two or three names. It needs contingencies.
Every coaching staff gets told no. The important part is what happens after the first no, the second no and the third no.
Even if the offensive line were only one of Clemson’s three most vulnerable position groups, last season’s rushing struggles and the first five games of this season suggest it should have been treated as a tier-one portal priority. Once the top targets went elsewhere, the response should not have been to shrug and place the entire burden on development.
Maybe the next player would not have been a future first-round pick. Clemson did not need perfection. It needed experience, competition, and, quite frankly, competent veteran depth.
Regret does not mean abandoning the plan
Luke’s confidence in his young players is understandable. He was hired to recruit and develop offensive linemen, and publicly panicking five games into the season would accomplish nothing. He is also right that Clemson’s freshmen and sophomores could become excellent players after taking these lumps. The experience they are gaining now may benefit the program for several seasons. But future development does not retroactively make the portal strategy correct.
Clemson’s coaches can believe in their young linemen and still admit they needed a veteran. They can defend their players without defending every roster decision that placed those players in this position. That is why saying “no regrets” to the media bothers me so much.
It turns a failed attempt to address an obvious weakness into something that sounds almost intentional. Clemson looked for veteran help because it understood the danger. It did not land that help, and the consequences are now unfolding around a freshman quarterback who has already been sacked 16 times.
Clemson did not need to abandon development. It needed to prioritize offensive line above multiple other grabs in the portal, pursue a wider group of veterans and prepare a better contingency plan when its preferred targets said no.

Luke may not regret how Clemson handled it. Based on everything we have seen through five games, he should.
