Dabo Swinney has spent nearly two decades building Clemson into one of college football’s most successful programs, but one national analyst believes the 2026 season could bring that run to an end.
NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach made one of the more aggressive predictions surrounding Clemson on Saturday, saying she believes this could be Swinney’s final year with the Tigers.
“My bold prediction is that this is the final year we see Dabo Swinney at Clemson,” Auerbach said. “We had talked a lot about him in this era, not really embracing the transfer portal and not really embracing NIL. Huge disappointment last season.”
There is no question Clemson enters this season with something to prove after falling well short of expectations a year ago.
The Tigers
opened last season ranked No. 4 in the AP Poll and were viewed as a potential national championship contender. Instead, they finished 7-6, giving Swinney the second-worst season of his tenure.
That disappointment has resulted in a much quieter offseason nationally. Clemson was picked fourth in the ACC preseason media poll, and there has been considerably less discussion about the Tigers as a potential College Football Playoff team.
Still, predicting the end of Swinney’s tenure is a significant leap.
He has produced a résumé unmatched by any other coach in Clemson history, winning nine ACC championships and two national titles while leading the Tigers to seven playoff appearances. Clemson was also back in the playoff as recently as 2024 after winning the ACC before its season ended against Texas.
There would be a considerable financial hurdle involved in any potential change as well. Swinney remains under contract through 2031, with a buyout worth more than $60 million following the upcoming season.
The more immediate question is whether Clemson can rebound, and Swinney made some noticeable changes in an effort to make that happen.
After years of taking a limited approach to the transfer portal, Clemson became much more active in adding outside help this offseason. Swinney did not, however, bring in another quarterback.
That leaves the offense in the hands of Chris Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds, who have competed for the starting job throughout the offseason. Vizzina is expected to receive the first opportunity when Clemson travels to Baton Rouge to face LSU on Sept. 5.
Auerbach pointed directly to Swinney’s decision at quarterback when explaining why she believes his future could become a major storyline.

“They don’t go into the portal for a quarterback,” Auerbach said. “I think if it’s maybe him deciding or maybe there’s a nudge, or maybe it’s just people deciding that Clemson needs to adapt to the times.”
Whether Clemson actually reaches that point is another matter.
Swinney has already shown a greater willingness to adjust his roster-building approach, and one strong season could quickly change the conversation surrounding the program. But after last year’s struggles, the Tigers enter 2026 needing to show that their disappointing campaign was an outlier rather than the beginning of a larger decline.
