Clemson had the defensive performance to win Saturday night. What it lacked was enough offense to make that effort count, leaving another frustrating result for fans to digest.
The Tigers fell 20-16 to Virginia Tech at Memorial Stadium, dropping to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play. A season that still offered a path toward conference contention now carries considerably more uncertainty.
There was plenty to unpack afterward, starting with an offense that scored just one touchdown and finished with 288 yards. Clemson struggled through another difficult first half before briefly finding momentum during a 13-point third quarter.
Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds provided the touchdown on a 16-yard run, while Nolan Hauser continued his reliable season
with three field goals. But the Tigers could never create enough separation to put Virginia Tech away.
That opened the door for a painful finish.
Three Clemson penalties helped the Hokies on their winning possession, which ended with Ethan Grunkemeyer finding Luke Reynolds for a fourth-down touchdown with 1:44 remaining.
Clemson’s last chance ended after a potential Bryant Wesco catch was overturned and Virginia Tech recorded a fourth-down sack.
The ending overshadowed a defense that collected six sacks and limited the Hokies to 234 yards. It also added another chapter to the discussion surrounding Clemson’s offensive struggles, protection issues and inability to capitalize on opportunities.
With a trip to Florida State approaching, the Tigers face more questions about where this season is headed.
Here is a look at the social media reaction to Clemson’s loss.

He thinks the offensive product isn't good enough.@ClemsonTigerNet
Clemson's offense is putrid. Play calls (play-action on 4th-and-9?), OL is a sieve, and the QB needed a year to percolate. As we've written, time and time again, failure to get a QB out of the portal, as well as experienced OL, is killing this team

Is this Dabo Swinney's final season at Clemson?

Clemson's defense held Virginia Tech to a season-low 234 yards.

It wasn't enough.
Tonight falls squarely on the offensive side of the ball.
A very poor showing as this team falls to 4-3 and is certainly out of the equation for the ACC title race.
Clemson had two weeks to prepare for this VT team. I think they need an offseason instead.
