As the Cowboys prepare to finally unveil the live-fire version of their revamped defense under new coordinator Christian Parker on Sunday night, one question has largely remained up in the air throughout training camp and the preseason: who will actually be responsible for executing the defensive play calls on the field by wearing the green communications dot?
Parker seemingly has several legitimate options to choose from. Following an offseason filled with roster churn, the Dallas defense is loaded with leaders in the middle level and secondary who could handle the job. Someone like Rashan Gary, Dee Winters, Cobie Durant, or Jalen Thompson could bring veteran experience to the role. Or Parker could lean into his familiarity with P.J. Locke,
who he coached in Denver. Malik Hooker has been with the Cowboys for a decade and would certainly be a trusted voice in the huddle. Or, oh yeah, there's future Hall of Famer Von Miller. Even genius-level rookie Caleb Downs's name has been tossed around as a perfectly viable option.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has hinted that the team has indeed explored several different plans for the defensive in-helmet receiver, but he confirmed on Friday that fourth-year linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will be taking the bulk of the job of relaying Parker's plays on the field.
"It's a process. Will there be multiple guys doing it? Overshown's going to be doing it quite a bit," Schottenheimer said during a radio call-in on 105.3 The Fan. "With our different packages going into this game, we do have different guys that can do it. But D-Mo will be doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

The 26-year-old is more than ready. After a 2023 preseason ACL injury wiped out his entire rookie season, he then missed another 14 games over the 2024 and 2025 seasons due to a tear in the other knee. Now, though, Overshown has finally had a healthy offseason and enters the campaign at full strength. The former third-round draft pick has long been expected to be a transcendent talent at linebacker; this may finally be the breakout season where he shows it as the designated field general of one of the league's most eagerly anticipated new units under Parker.
"He allows us to play fast just by putting us in the right calls, just by testing us in the meeting rooms, making sure everybody knows who they're tied to, what the other 10 people are doing on the field," Overshown has said of Parker's style.
Overshown has already been thrown into the fire with a surprise green-dot test run during training camp. As ESPN's Todd Archer reported back in July, Parker simulated a communications-system failure to see how Overshown would handle the radio silence in his helmet. According to Schottenheimer, the former Longhorn seamlessly got the entire defense into the "exact right call."
Overshown aced that experiment with flying colors. Now it looks like he'll be sporting a tiny sticker of another color when he takes the field Sunday night, aiming to pass a much bigger test in a much bigger role.
