Thursday's practice report offered Cowboys fans a glimmer of hope that linebacker DeMarvion Overshown would be making his return to action in the team's Week 6 trip to Green Bay.
On Friday, however, head coach Brian Schottenheimer all but snuffed out that possibility.
"[He's] doing okay," Schottenheimer told reporters during a press conference about Overshown's rehab work. "I still think it's probably a long shot for this game, but it was good to see him out there moving around a little bit better."
Overshown had been limited in Thursday's practice, an upgrade from his non-participant status the day prior. That seemed to indicate that he was rehabbing nicely from a hamstring injury suffered late in the season opener. Originally projected to miss
"one or two weeks," the 26-year-old sat out the next four games and, now, according to Schottenheimer, he will likely be inactive for a fifth straight.
But the former third-round draft pick says progress is being made.
"I feel better than what I felt when the injury happened," Overshown said earlier this week, per the team website. "I'm running around, I'm doing everything you can as a football player. These [hamstring injuries] are tricky. You can have six good days in a row and then out of nowhere, something happens. Right now I'm feeling great. I'm feeling like I can run around and do everything I could before the injury. At this point, it's just how practice goes throughout the week, how the [hamstring] handles all the stresses of a full 60 minutes of football."
Overshown has a well-documented history of lower-body injuries, including ACL tears in both knees. He has appeared in just 20 of the Cowboys' 56 regular-season games since he joined the team in 2023. Overshown was set to wear the green playcalling dot for the defense this season; rookie Jaishawn Barham took over those duties starting in Week 2 and has performed well despite the unit's overall struggles.
