The Dallas Cowboys just can't help themselves but to be full of drama. Of course, there's a lot of drama to be had after the team boasted about their offseason hire of young gun Christian Parker as the new defensive coordinator. The club, from head coach Brian Schottenheimer up to the owners group of the Jones family and down to the players, spent the offseason lauding the 34-year old prodigy who would be calling plays for the first time in the NFL.
In the season's sixth week the team has had a player's-only meeting, dealt with a will-he-or-won't-he debate about Parker moving to the booth (sparked by the always-too-talkative Jerry Jones), and they've made a veteran coaching hire in adding Mike Pettine. Now, on Friday, the head coach has further
added fuel to the flame, indicating that Pettine reports directly to him, not to Parker.

To be put bluntly, Parker no longer stands alone as the top defensive voice in the coaching org chart. Pettine is, at least, his equal. When things get escalated, there is now a legitimized path for players to get the message to Schottenheimer and circumvent Parker.
Throughout the week, the Pettine conversation has been about several things. Pettine gave Parker his first job in the NFL, and Parker tried to have him join the staff when he was building it. But after a power struggle in Minnesota with Brian Flores, Pettine opted to retire. According to Parker, the two have remained in contact throughout the season, and it appeared that there was much ado about nothing when it came to concerns about whether or not Pettine was being forced on Parker.
That seemed settled based on the idea that Pettine was organizationally a resource for Parker, but Schottenheimer's admission that Pettine is on the same "level" as Parker cannot be seen as anything less than a warning shot for Parker's tenure.
If Pettine is reporting to Schottenheimer, that means the chain of command dictates that he's going to be passing on intel to the head coach on the conversations he's having with Parker. The Cowboys have long provided evidence that the power structure of the organization, with the owner being so close to the players, has undermined many a head coach.
Now the head coach is doing it to his young, beleaguered defensive coordinator.
Things have not gone according to plans and Dallas' defense is struggling in many of the same ways they did under one-and-done veteran DC Matt Eberflus (and Mike Zimmer before him). Following the team's embarrassing TNF loss to the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team was set to make changes to both process and personnel.
Fans should expect to see a different rotation of players on the grass when they hit Lambeau Field on Sunday night to take on the Green Bay Packers.
