Sometimes making a big splash is a bad thing. Olympic diving, cat burglary, bomb defusal, and NFL cornerbacking, all experience moments where the less splash, the better. Joey Porter Jr.'s NFL debut constitutes a moment of a little splash being a big win.
When the Dallas Cowboys traded for Porter on September 30, they weren’t quite sure when he’d be contributing. Porter hadn’t played this season amidst a contract dispute wrapped up in a back injury. He was in shape but maybe not game shape.
"That's why I wasn't really out there too much," Porter said via DallasCowboys.com.
With their Week 5 matchup against the Houston Texans just four days away, asking him to hit the field immediately seemed more than a little ambitious. Yet hit the ground running
is exactly what Porter did this week, and the results were beautifully uneventful.
Dallas Cowboys CB Joey Porter Jr. played 24 of 52 possible defensive snaps in his debut with the team (46.2% playtime).

This includes 19 snaps in coverage without allowing a single reception against just one target faced.

Based on early tracking by Sumer Sports, Porter played 16 coverage snaps against the Texans on Sunday. Of those snaps he was targeted zero times, allowed zero receptions, for zero yards and zero touchdowns. It was splashless in all the right ways.
Next Gen Stats registered one target but zero success for Houston on that target, so the results were ultimately the same. PFF tracked 20 coverage snaps and came away with the same row of zeros. The All-22 will be the ultimate say but the results won't change; Porter locked things down.
"I'm a dog at the end of the day, and I want to be out there with the guys," Porter said. "So I have to prove why they got me here, and I feel like I did that today."
In 2026, the Cowboys secondary has been making splashes for all the wrong reasons. They came into Week 4 ranked No. 31 in EPA/dropback allowed. Their revolving door of personnel made things inconsistent and difficult to build on. Getting a player of Porter’s quality into the fold as soon as possible was important for Dallas, so get him into the fold they did.
Porter didn’t look like a player wanting to ease into things. He was looking for Nico Collins early and occasionally got what he was asking for. While he wasn’t put to the test, he put up some good film, allowing very little separation and displaying inspiring fundamentals along the way. There was a reason he was avoided.
Nico Collins had a big day against the #Cowboys: 7 catches, 117 yards, 2 TDs

👀 … except for against Joey Porter Jr.
Collins vs. JPJ: 5 snaps, 0 targets 🔒
JPJ total line: 19 snaps, 1 target, 0 yards allowed, 0 penalties 🔒 https://t.co/xskZXL3BjI
It finally looks like the Cowboys have a real one at the cornerback position. With any luck the return of Cobie Durant will help solidify a unit that no longer needs someone like Reddy Steward taking double-digit snaps in the slot.
The Cowboys’ defense is far from a good thing, but things are looking brighter with Porter now donning the star. Porter didn’t have a splashy debut and that’s a-okay for the Cowboys.
