From a fan’s perspective, nothing is worse than losing before a break. Whether it’s the week off during a bye or a 10-day breather like the Dallas Cowboys have now, it’s a delay at a chance at redemption. The sting of defeat hurts bad enough under normal circumstances, allowing it to feaster over an extended break is just salt in the wound.
From a team perspective, nothing could be more helpful. Winning before a break might set up a team for complacency. Losing shines a bright light on the issues. It builds urgency, motivates and properly grounds players and coaches as they approach a critical stretch of practice and strategy.
The Cowboys are facing a tough situation as they enter Week 6 of their 2026 campaign. At 2-3, they have a losing record
and are situated behind roughly 10 teams in the NFC. They have talent on their roster, but most of it is on offense. Their defense, arguably the NFL’s worst, has shown no sign of improvement over last year despite major changes to the roster and a complete scheme and coach change over the offseason.
The good news is everyone in Dallas’ division is equally as awful. Only the New York Giants have a winning record and everyone, including the Giants, looks like some version of dysfunctional through five games. Technically, the Cowboys don’t have to be a top 10 team in the conference, they only need to be the best team in their division. It’s probably their only route to the playoffs and it’s still firmly within their grasp if they’re up to the challenge.
This extra stretch of discomfort over their break is a great time to focus on the task and work like there’s no tomorrow. For some in the organization, there might not be a tomorrow. The Cowboys are too talented to be this bad. Injuries have a role in this mess, but they aren’t the cause or even a worthy excuse.
Losing before a 10-day break has been painful for fans, players, coaches and everyone in and around the Cowboys organization. If this level of failure isn’t motivation to get better, nothing will be. It might be just what the Cowboys need to set off on the road to improvement.
