Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current ESPN color commentatorTroy Aikman reportedly had an in-booth argument with play-by-play man Joe Buck prior to Week 5's Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams.
The heated exchange stems from Aikman's contract dispute with ESPN as the lame-duck commentator just saw his in booth counterpart receive a six-year, $108 million contract while the former three-time Super Bowl winner is in the last year of his deal. Appearing on DFW The Ticket on Thursday, Aikman spoke candidly about the situation, confirming that a confrontation had taken place while stating clearly he expects to be a free agent at the end of the season.
Troy Aikman this morning on @dfwticket about rumors
of tension between him and Joe Buck. “There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time. I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and…

Aikman's comments add another layer to ESPN's dilemma, as he network must weigh the risk of losing its lead analyst agains the cost of keeping one of the most recognizable voices in football broadcasting.
The situation has become particularly awkward given the pair's history.
Aikman and Buck have worked together since 2022, first at Fox before moving to ESPN, making them one of the longest-running partnerships in NFL broadcasting. Despite the reported disagreement, they completed the Rams-Bills broadcast without obvious disruption.
Back in 2022 and after more than two decades at Fox, ESPN lured Aikman away signing him to a five-year, $90 million deal which was more than the QB made during his playing days in Dallas. Buck received a bit less signing for $75 million over the same time span.
It is also notable that Amazon's play-by-play commentator Al Micheals is on a year-to-year basis and remains undecided on his announcing future. Some have speculated that the broadcasting offseason could have a seismic shift further strengthening Aikman's negotiating leverage.
For Aikman, the unresolved contract situation could determine whether that partnership continues beyond the 2026 season. With his deal approaching its expiration and ESPN preparing to broadcast its first Super Bowl, the network faces an important decision about the future of its lead NFL booth.
